Finding rooms to book on points for families can be a challenge, especially large families! A great option are the timeshare properties that hotel chains operate that can be booked with points. IHG (Intercontinental Hotel Group) has Holiday Inn Vacation Club Properties throughout the US. Most “standard rooms” at these timeshare properties are actually 1-2 bedroom villas that have a full kitchen and separate living room. Some have other on-site activities as well. Keep reading to find out which properties you can book for a family of 6 (and 2 you can book for 8!)

Earning IHG Rewards Points and Free Nights

While you can earn IHG Rewards points by staying at IHG properties, the easiest way to earn a big chunk of them for a family vacation is to open an IHG credit card and earn the sign up bonus. IHG cards are issued by Chase, so make sure you are familiar with the Chase 5/24 rule before applying.

IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card – 175,000 points
    • $99 annual fee
    • Earn 175,000 bonus points after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening
    • Reward Night after each account anniversary year at eligible IHG hotels worldwide (worth 40,000 points)
    • 4th night free when you redeem points for any stay of 4 or more nights
    • Earn up to 26 points total per $1 spent when you stay at an IHG hotel
    • Earn 5 points per $1 spent on purchases on travel, gas stations, and restaurants. Earn 3 point per $1 spent on all other purchases
    • Platinum Elite status as long as you remain a Premier card member
    • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck Fee Credit of up to $100 every 4 years as reimbursement for the application fee charged to your card
    • $50 in United TravelBank cash each calendar year

Most IHG properties have switched to dynamic pricing, but in my searches it seems that all the timeshare properties are still pricing very consistently. Almost all the properties were 35,000-40,000 points per night regardless of the cash price of the hotel. This price range is perfect because it means they still qualify for the annual free night certificate you will earn if you keep the IHG Premier card year after year. The one exception is the property in New Orleans which I noticed dynamic pricing ranging from 41,000 to over 50,000 points per night.

I think these represent a great sweet spot for larger families, especially those which otherwise might need to book 2 hotel rooms. In addition, they have the extra perk of a full kitchen so you can cook some meals in your villa.

Holding the IHG credit card will also give you the 4th night free on award bookings, so if you plan to stay for 4 nights, the price per night is even lower. In our household, we have an older version of the IHG card which we both keep in order to pair together 2 free night certificates each year for what we consider a pre-paid, discounted vacation. We then opened the IHG Premier and after a year downgraded to the Traveler to keep the 4th night free benefit.

    How to Find Availability

The IHG website doesn’t have a search tool that easily lets you search flexible dates to find award availability. Once you have a certain property you are searching for, you can follow these steps to find available dates:

Use a computer (rather than smart phone or IHG app) to search. I enter in the property I want to search as well as a very long date range. This does not have to be the range you actually want to stay. In fact, if you put in popular times, this will actually help. Here is a video walkthrough of how I find availability.

Here is another video showing how to find available dates at properties that have more limited availability. Sometimes it requires a 2 step process.
