Preferred Hotels with Choice Points [Map]

Categories: MapsBy Last Updated: November 27, 2024

Note: Choice has changed their pricing several times this year so the point prices shown may not be current. Check the Preferred partner website for current pricing.

With the partnership between Choice Privileges and Preferred Hotels, you can book an independent luxury hotel for your whole family with points.

The challenge is that many of these hotels have a maximum occupancy of two people. Finding a hotel that sleeps a family can be tedious and time-consuming. But our team has done the research for you to find the hotels that can fit a group of three, four, five, or even more! For this post we focused on Preferred Hotels in North and South America.

We’ll show you how to find availability for Preferred Hotels, which ones can be booked for more than two people, and how to book them using Choice Privileges points. You’ll also learn how to get Choice Privileges points and how to decide whether it makes sense to buy points.

What are Preferred Hotels?

Preferred Hotels is a collection of independent luxury hotels that are banded together under the Preferred Hotels and Resorts name. The group includes properties all around the world.  Each hotel must meet high quality standards in order to be a part of the group. That means these are very nice hotels!

Many of the hotels have a maximum occupancy of two people per room but there are plenty of hidden gems that sleep more people.

What are Choice Privileges Points?

Choice Privileges points are the points currency of Choice Hotels. Choice is often overlooked as a hotel program in the points and miles world because some of the US hotels are brands like Quality Inn and Comfort Inn. They do have some nice options though in Europe and throughout the US — and the Preferred Hotels collection is a another great example of interesting ways to use Choice points.

Normally when you book a hotel with Choice points, you can only book up to 100 days in advance. This rule doesn’t apply when booking a Preferred Hotel with Choice points so it makes it even easier to find a deal!

What Hotels Can I Book?

Whatever type of vacation you’re looking for, you can probably find a Preferred Hotel to book with Choice. They have hotels all over the world with a wide variety of styles including beach resorts, mountain getaways, and all-inclusives.

Here are some examples of hotels we found with rooms that sleep at least four people.

Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach

Cancun

This all-inclusive hotel in Cancun is 55,000 points per night. There’s NO extra charge for kids meaning a family of four can stay completely free using points. The cash price for this hotel when booking for four people is over $1,000 per night so that’s an incredible value!

The Wort Hotel

Jackson Hole

Visit Grand Teton National Park and stay at this beautiful property. The resort is located on the main square in Jackson, Wyoming with convenient access to the national park and everything Jackson Hole has to offer.

Rooms here cost 45,000 points per night and sleep up to five people. (Rates have gone up to 62,000 points per night as of November 2024)

The Park Hotel

London, Ontario Canada

This beautiful hotel is nestled between three of the great lakes. You can easily visit Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario while staying at the Park Hotel.

The hotel features all suites and includes free breakfast. The cost is 25,000 points per night for up to four people.

Rosen Shingle Creek

Orlando, Florida

If your family enjoys theme parks, check out Rosen Shingle Creek. This hotel is conveniently located between Walt Disney World and Universal Studios.

Rooms cost 35,000 points per night and sleep up to five people.

How to Find Availability

There is a specific website to book Preferred hotels with Choice points. Visit https://www.choicehotels.com/ascend/preferred-hotels-partner. You need to log in or create an account to see availability for booking with points. If you don’t have an account already, it’s easy and free to set up.

Once you’re logged in, scroll down and click the yellow “start booking” button.

If you have a location in mind, you can narrow the search by selecting a region, country state/province, and/or city.

If you’re not sure where you want to go, you can add filters for things like preferred amenities, activities, or setting.

When browsing the hotels, the web page looks something like this. Click on the black button that says “view rates” to check for availability.

You can also view available hotels on a map. To do this, click on the toggle button that says “map view.” You can click the button before or after you narrow the search. In the below example, I narrowed the search to Mexico and then clicked “map view.”

From here, you can click on an individual hotel or narrow the search further.

Once you’ve chosen a hotel, click on it to see pricing and availability.

Any dates without an x should be available.

If you don’t already have the points needed to cover the stay in your account, you may see results that look like the image below. The dates where  you can see the price should be available but you won’t be able to proceed further because of the “insufficient points” error.

It’s always a good idea to confirm availability before buying or transferring points. To make sure the dates you’re looking at are actually available, you may want to call the hotel to confirm.

If the hotel is available and you have enough points in your account to proceed, you’ll be able to choose a room. The types of rooms available vary between hotels. For some, only a standard room is available to be booked with points. Other hotels will offer more options.

If you’d like a different room than what is showing available to be booked with points, it’s worth calling the hotel to see what they have. Many hotels will allow you to book the base room with points then pay to upgrade to a different room. This isn’t the case for all hotels though so definitely call and ask before completing the booking.

If you try to book for more people than the hotel allows, you’ll see a red error pop up at the bottom of the calendar that says “We are sorry, there are no rooms available for the dates you have selected.”

If this happens, try lowering the number of people per room.

Booking a Preferred Hotel with Choice Points

Once you’ve decided on a hotel and confirmed availability, it’s time to book! If you don’t have enough points in your account, the first step is to get more points. More info on that is below.

When you have enough points in your account, the actual booking process is simple. Go through the same steps as above to select your hotel and choose a room. Make sure to enter the correct number of adults and children and include their ages this time. Click the yellow “select” button on your chosen room, then enter your information to complete the booking.

On the booking page you’ll be able to see the change and cancellation policy for the hotel. These policies vary between hotels.

How to get Choice Points

You can earn Choice points by staying at Choice hotels but it’s easier and faster to earn them by signing up for a new credit card or  by purchasing points.

Credit Card Welcome Offers

The easiest way to earn a lot of Choice Points quickly is to sign up for a new credit card that offers a sign up bonus, then transfer those points to the Choice Privileges program. Many banks transfer to Choice Privileges including American Express, Capital One, Citi, and Wells Fargo.

Citi ThankYou® Points and Wells Fargo Rewards points both transfer at a rate of 1:2 meaning for every 1,000 points you transfer, you’ll get 2,000 Choice points.

More info on earning Choice points can be found in our article on Choice Points.

Purchasing Points Through Daily Getaways

The US Travel association does a promotion every year called Daily Getaways. With the promotion you can buy hotel points, theme park tickets and more at a discount. Each day offers a different deal and the promotion runs from April 15-May 1 this year.

On April 29, 2024, you can buy 55,000 Choice Privileges points for $285.

Purchasing Points from Choice

You can also purchase points directly from Choice but it’s more expensive. They occasionally run promotions that make it a better deal.

Is it worth it to buy points?

When determining whether or not it makes sense to buy hotel points, it’s important to consider the cash rate of the hotel and compare that to the cost of buying points.

Here’s an example. To book the Grand Fiesta all inclusive hotel in Cancun, it would cost a family of four 55,000 Choice points or $1,079 per night. With the Daily Getaways deal, it costs $285 to get 55,000 Choice points. That’s a much better deal than paying $1,079!

Other times it might not make sense. For example, if a hotel costs 55,000 points per night or $250 cash, you’re better off paying cash in that case.

The “map view” no longer shows a Book Now button. Any other ways to see availability without having enough Choice points.

You can actually see availability now without going to the map view. I updated the post to reflect the website changes!

When I search for hotels in Cancun via Preferred hotels link you provided, it only shows two hotels ‘ATELIER Playa Mujeres’ and ‘Haven Riviera Cancun’. I don’t see Grand Fiesta. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

I’m not seeing the Grand Fiesta anymore either and I’m not sure why! Not all Preferred hotels are bookable with Choice points so it may be that Choice has removed them as an option.
