How to Pick a Card
This post includes offers that I think are noteworthy right now. I always include best offers available in these links, even if I don’t earn a commission from it. This is especially true for Amex cards which often have referral offers that are much higher than affiliate links.

Best Beginner Card
This are my favorite cards to start with and the best overall card for beginners. The points can be transferred to airlines and hotels. If you already have this card, check out my super easy to follow Three Year Plan!

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is THE top beginner card I recommend for miles & points. The travel protections it provides is top tier, too. Get this card early in your travel points journey, it’s a keeper. It’s the first card in my Three Year Plan.
But the good news is that points you’ll earn are easy to redeem and it’s also easy to keep earning them. Our favorite use is to transfer them to Hyatt for hotel stays but you can use them for cash back, for any travel expense, or for airlines. See more inspiration here and here.
It has a fun extra benefit through December 31, 2027: $10 a month for non-restaurant purchases at DoorDash. Read here how to use this benefit.
If you want to learn more about it, check out Season 1 of my podcast — I dive into the benefits and how to use the points.
The standard bonus used to be 60,000 points but 75,000 is the new standard offer (as of June 23, 2025) since the points are now worth less via Chase Travel.
A 100,000 point offer ended in May 2025.
An offer for 60,000 points + $300 credit towards Chase Travel in the first year ran from September – early November 2024.
An offer for 75,000 points ran from early May – mid June 2024.
A publicly available online offer for 80,000 points ran from March 2023-May 2023.
An 80,000 point bonus ended in Fall 2022.

- Great transfer options to Hyatt, United, Southwest, and more
The annual fee is one of the highest of all premium cards. If you can use the credits/coupons — you’ll come out ahead! But if they don’t match your typical spending, this might not be a great card for you. Use our benefits calculator at the bottom of this article to see if it makes sense for you!
This is one of the few cards that still gives you access to Priority Pass experiences (restaurants were discontinued as of July 1, 2024). Most other cards just give access to the lounges but if you frequent an airport with a Priority pass experience, this benefit can be worth a lot to you! It also gives access to a growing network of Sapphire Lounges.
The travel credit is also very easy to use which is a huge plus.
An offer for 100k + $500 for Chase Travel ran when it relaunched from July to late August 2025.
An offer for 75k points ended in June 2024. A publicly available online offer for 80,000 points ran in December 2022.
An offer for 100,000 points ended in 2019.
This card was launched in 2016 with a 100,000 point offer. After that the standard became 60.000.
- Miles can be redeemed to erase any travel purchase. 50,000 miles = $500
- Can be transferred to a variety of partners like Wyndham, Avianca, Turkish Airways and more
- Earn 5X miles on hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
- Receive up to a $120 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck®
- Also worth considering the Venture X which has more benefits.
This card often has a very comparable welcome offer to the higher annual fee Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card — but with a lower annual fee.
The miles you earn are worth a minimum of 1 cent per mile so 75,000 miles at minimum can be redeemed to offset $750 of any travel expense. You also have the option to transfer miles to airline partners or hotel partners just like you can with the Venture X.
This card also includes a credit for TSA Precheck or Global Entry!
Keep in mind that the terms state that you are only eligible to earn a bonus on this card if you haven’t earned a bonus on this same card –or the Venture X in the past 48 months. If you have received a welcome offer on the Venture X in the past 48 months, you should not apply for this card.
An offer expired in July 2021 for a total of 100K: 50K after $3K in the first 3 months + 20K after $20K in the first 6 months.
An offer ended September 2024 for 75k miles + a $250 travel credit to be used in the Capital One travel portal.
An offer ended in May 2024 for 75K + $250 travel credit. At the same time a targeted personal referral offer for 100k ended as well.

- Each calendar year, enjoy up to $300 off a hotel stay of 2 nights or more when booked through cititravel.com
- Every calendar year, earn up to $200 in statement credits on your choice of up to 2 of the following brands: 1stDibs, American Airlines (exclusions apply), Best Buy®, Future Personal Training, and Live Nation (exclusions apply)
- Enjoy complimentary access to 1,500+ airport lounges worldwide
- Every calendar year, receive 4 Admirals Club® Citi Strata Elite℠ Passes for access to nearly 50 Admirals Club® lounges
- Receive a statement credit, up to $120 every four years, as reimbursement for your application fee for Global Entry® or TSA PreCheck®
This has a very strong offer at its launch. The credits make it a bit harder to get the full value of that $595 annual fee back. But because they are calendar year credits, the very first year of holding the card has a much higher value potential. That’s because you can get benefits like the $200 Splurge Credit or $300 hotel credit right when you get the card and then again after January 1st. The Splurge credit is easy to use at Best Buy (you can buy gift cards for other stores like Amazon).
This card also has some unique features is (1) lounge access for and (2) transfer partners.
For Priority Pass lounge access, you’ll get to bring in 2 guests — not quite enough for most families. But you also get 4 passes for the Admirals Club® lounges (valid if you have a same day boarding pass arriving or departing on a oneworld airline). These passes get in an adult and up to 3 children under 18. For families flying American a few time a year, it’s an interesting perk.
This card also has a few niche but great transfer partners. The biggest is new in 2025 — Citi added American Airlines as a transfer partner. Another favorite transfer partner is Choice Hotels — especially with the 1:2 ratio this card offers. That means your points double when you transfer to Choice. Another strong partner is Preferred Hotels.
Ultimately, you’ll need to use our Benefits Calculator to find out if this makes sense for you.
This card debuted July 28, 2025. At that time, 80,000 points was the new offer. There was a limited 100,000 point offer available in branch.
- Earn up to 17X total points per $1 spent at thousands of hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy® with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Card.
- Earn 3X Bonvoy points per $1 on the first $6,000 spent in combined purchases each year on grocery stores, gas stations, and dining.
- 1 Free Night Award annually after your Card account anniversary (up to 35k)
- After holding this card for 1 year, you can upgrade to the Ritz Carlton card, which is one option for families to get airport lounge access.
- Automatic Silver Elite status
If you like Marriott, this is a solid card to get and then hold on to — we find that the annual free night is easy to redeem at hotels that cost $250+ per night. That’s a half price hotel! Some people prefer the welcome bonus that includes certificates for up to 50k per night, but keep in mind these expire within a year of earning so you need to have a redemption in mind. Check out my map of
family friendly Marriotts for inspiration.
I like this card even better for the pathway it provides to getting a Ritz-Carlton® Card which has great lounge benefits.
Bonus fluctuates from 75,000 bonus points and up. Sometimes the bonus is 3 or 5 free night certificates for up to 50k per night. Note that personal referral offers often don’t match the best available offer.
An offer ended in November 2025 for 125,000 Bonus Points + 1 Free Night Award.

- First checked bag free for you and 4 companions on eligible bags when traveling on domestic itineraries operated by American Airlines.
- Preferred boarding
- $180 in Turo credits. Earn up to $30 in statement credits for each eligible completed trip booked with your card from October 19, 2025 to October 18, 2026.
This is a great card for earning AA miles — which I love in particular for international flights. It’s not a card I keep long term (though you might want to if you find the free bags helpful). I usually get it every 48 months as the terms allow. I generally wait for an offer of 65,000 miles or higher.
You’ll find AA mentioned as a sweet spot on almost all of our regional guides like Japan, SouthEast Asia, and Africa.
Offers vary and sometimes include statement credits. The standard bonus is 60,000 miles.
The highest ever offer was 80,000 miles from July 2025-September 30, 2025.

- $84 Dunkin’ Credit: With the $84 Dunkin’ Credit, you can earn up to $7 in monthly statement credits after you enroll and pay with the American Express(R) Gold Card at U.S. Dunkin’ locations. Enrollment is required to receive this benefit.
- $100 Resy Credit: Get up to $100 in statement credits each calendar year after you pay with the American Express® Gold Card to dine at U.S. Resy restaurants or make other eligible Resy purchases. That’s up to $50 in statement credits semi-annually. Enrollment required.

This is a strong offer for points that transfer to a lot of airline partners. A lot of people really like the 4x earning possibilities on this card. But it’s a card that takes a lot of work to find value in the annual fee, you have to make sure to use all the little credits.
If you’re interested in this card, know that getting this offer will make you ineligible to get the a welcome offer on the American Express® Green Card. So to maximize your points you’d want to get that card first. Also if you have (or have had recently) a American Express Platinum Card®, you’ll be ineligible for this offer.
See benefits calculator here.
Public offer used to generally be 60k. We have seen targeted or referral offers of 90,000 and 100,00 in 2024-2025. Amex recently changed offers on this card to be “up to” certain amounts and you don’t know what your offer will be until you start the application. You will see a personalized offer after you start but before your credit is pulled. In the past, highly targeted offers to certain people will be higher.

- Provides 1 free night certificate every year on account anniversary (up to a category 4 hotel)
- If you spend $15,000 per year on the card you will earn an additional free night certificate
- Receive World of Hyatt Discoverist status for as long as your account is open
- Receive 5 qualifying night credits towards your next tier status every year
- Earn 2 additional qualifying night credits every time you spend $5,000 on your card
This is a big spend required to get the full offer on this. After that you’d actually earn an additional Free Night Certificate (total of 6) because spending $15,000 in a year on the card always gets you another Free Night Certificate.
Overall, a good offer IF you have a plan to use the certificates and IF you can meet that spend requirement. Even getting just the first tier of the offer is better than the normal offer if you have a specific plan to use the certificates at a Category 4 hotel.
Just keep in mind you can’t use the free night certificates and any other club access or suite upgrade or guest of honor on the same reservation.
We consider this card a long term keeper but the welcome offer is never that exciting. But we keep it because you’ll get a Free Night Award every year on your account anniversary (for a Category 1-4 hotel) and instant Discoverist status (which is helpful for guaranteeing breakfast at Hyatt Places not that it’s not a guarantee). For anyone trying to earn Globalist or trying to earn 20 Elite Night credits to get Club Lounge Access, this card is a also must! You’ll get 5 elite night credits added to your tracker just for holding the card.
The standard sign up offer is 30k bonus points. In January 2025, we saw a small jump up to 35k and then it decreased in July 2025, down to 25k.

- $200 Airline Fee Credit: Select one qualifying airline and then receive up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year when incidental fees, such as checked bags and in-flight refreshments, are charged by the airline to the Platinum Card(R) Account*. American Express relies on airlines to submit the correct information on airline transactions to identify incidental fee purchases. If you do not see a credit for a qualifying incidental purchase on your eligible Card after 8 weeks, simply call the number on the back of your Card. Qualifying airlines are subject to change. See terms & conditions for more details.
- $300 lululemon Credit: Enjoy up to $75 in statement credits each quarter when you use the Platinum Card(R) for eligible purchases at U.S. lululemon retail stores (excluding outlets) and lululemon.com. That’s up to $300 in statement credits each calendar year. Enrollment required.

That’s up to $50 in statement credits from January through June and up to $50 in statement credits from July through December. No minimum purchase required. Enrollment required.
This has a high annual fee. BUT may be worth it for some people, especially if you can leverage the airline, digital entertainment, and Uber credits. The airline incidental statement credit is per calendar year. That means most people can actually get the $200 airline credit twice in the first year of holding the card.
This is a strong offer for points that transfer to a lot of airline partners. You apply and find out your welcome offer. After you apply — if approved, you will find out your offer amount and then can decide to accent the card and your offer. Then you’d need to meet the minimum spend requirement to earn your points.
Just note that if you get this offer, you’ll become ineligible to earn a welcome offer on the Gold or Green cards. To maximize your points earned, start with the Green card, then get the Gold, then this one.
See a benefits calculator here.
The offers on this card fluctuate greatly. It has been as low as 80,000 points. Typically personal referral links show higher offers than affiliate links and I always try to keep my pages updates with these.

IHG has a large footprint and it’s useful to have a stash of IHG points for lots of kinds of trips! IHG has a large number of hotels in Europe that sleep 4 (which is rare!). You can also check out my map of Holiday Inn Vacation Clubs — they have villas with kitchens and some sleep 6. We often use IHG points everywhere from Holiday Inn Express, avid, or Staybridge Suites on road trips. And for a little upgraded stay, we love the Kimpton brand.
This card is a keeper for the annual free night certificate you’ll get on your cardmember anniversary each year. We often redeem ours for a staycation in Chicago!

- Includes Alaska’s Companion Fare from $122 ($99 fare + taxes and fees from $23)

- 10% relationship bonus on miles earned via spending if you have a qualifying account (Bank of America banking account) that has a transaction every 90 days

This is a new card that replaced the previous Alaska Airlines card.
Alaska has some great sweet spot options and includes a free stopover on award flights, even one way flights! Bank of America can be sensitive to lots of recent card openings. Your best chance of approval if you have opened more than 2 cards in 12 months is to open a Bank of America checking account. Business card may be a better option for you if trying to stay under 5/24.
But beware! Bank of America’s website makes it really hard to set up Autopay!
This card fluctuates from 40,000-70,000 miles. Occasionally it will also include a $100 statement credit.

United just quietly upped their pricing for flights booked with points, so that was a disappointment to see (though it is part of points inflation). This is a slightly higher than usual offer. I like that the annual fee is waived in the first year and you still get a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit in the first year as well as those two guest passes to United Club!
60k or 70k miles are both standard offers for this card. In March 2025, we saw an elevated offer of 80k miles with a spending requirement of $3,000. An additional 5k miles were offered upon adding an authorized user and using an agent’s promotional code.

- Enroll to earn a $10 monthly statement credit when spending $10 or more per month on qualifying subscriptions or add-on purchases made directly at DisneyPlus.com, Hulu.com or Plus.ESPN.com. Yearly activation required.
This card was released in February 2026 with a strong welcome offer and an interesting option for Disney fans. If you don’t have any other card that gives you a monthly credit for Disney+ and you pay for that service, the $10/month credit will be easy to use.
The statement credit for theme park tickets would be very easy to use for anyone who goes to Disney annually. Note that it is only for Disney tickets at US Theme Park tickets purchased directly with Disney.
One caution is that this card doesn’t seem to include trip protections that other Chase cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred

Card do. That would make me hesitant to book an cruise on the card or even resort stay — unless I was already paying for supplemental insurance out of pocket.
Disney® Premier Visa® Card

alternate offer – non-affiliate:
Earn a $400 statement credit
Earn a $400 statement credit after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening with a new Disney Premier Visa Card.

- 10% off select merchandise purchases at select locations and 10% off select dining locations most days at the Disneyland® Resort and Walt Disney World® Resort
- Save 10% on select purchases at DisneyStore.com
Generally speaking, I think this card doesn’t offer a ton of value long term. You do get some perks with savings at Disneyland and Disney World but you can also get those same perks with opening a Chase checking account and choosing one of the Disney Debit designs.
The standard sign up offer since 2021 has been a $300 statement credit. At the end of 2023, the offer went up to $400 for a short period of time. In May 2025, the offer was elevated again to $400.

Chase Ink cards are our favorite option when we have larger expenses coming that help us to meet the higher minimum spend. This card will allow you to transfer its points to all of Chase’s travel partners like Hyatt, United, Southwest, and more.
I also love the 3x earning on travel expenses and no foreign transaction fees — along with a good suite of benefits.
This card used to offer 100k points but required a $15,000 spend. An offer for 120,000 points after spending $8000 in three months ran from July to early September 2024. For most of 2025, the offer has been for 90k points with an $8000 spending requirement.
Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card
- If you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you can transfer the Ink points to the Sapphire card to get all the airline and hotel transfer benefits!
- Earn unlimited 1.5% Cash Back rewards on all business purchases
For many years, the bonus on this card offered $500 after you spent $3000 in 3 months.
The offer changed to $750 after spending $7500 in 3 months during the pandemic.
In fall 2022, the offer went to $900 after spending $6,000 in 3 months. In fall 2023, we saw the $900 offer return from September to mid-January 2024.
In fall 2024, we saw the $900 offer from mid-September to early November .
A $900 offer after spending $6000 in 3 months ran from September 12 to Nov 13, 2025.

Capital One Spark Cash Plus
- Earn unlimited 2% cash back on every purchase, everywhere—with no limits or category restrictions
- Earn unlimited 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
- Redeem cash back at any time with no minimums
- The Spark Cash Plus card has no preset spending limit, so it can adapt to your needs based on your spending behavior, payment history, credit profile and other factors
- If you have a card that earns Venture miles, this cash back can convert to miles and be used to then transfer to hotel and airline partners
- Spark Cash Plus has no APR because your balance is due in full every month
The Capital One Spark Cash Plus is a great option if you have a lot of expenses coming up. The current welcome offer offers a hefty $2,000 cash back bonus.
This business card generally is known to not report to personal credit reports so it should not add to your 5/24 count.
Overall this is a strong card option if you can meet the spend requirements. Because you earn 2% cash back, you’ll have earned $2600 cash back total after spending $30,000. It would be a great card to add to my Three Year Plan if you have high expenses.
Note that this does require to you pay off your bill in full each month.
Previous offer was “Earn a $1,200 cash bonus when you spend $30,000 in the first 3 months” and other previous offers required up to $50,000 in spend to reach a bonus.
Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Credit Card
- TSA Precheck, Global Entry, or NEXUS statement credit (up to $120 every 4 years)
- 4 upgraded boardings per year (ends December 31, 2025)
- Free in-flight wifi (ends December 31, 2025)
- Earn 2,500 tier qualifying points (TQPs) toward A-List status for every $5,000 spent in purchases annually
- 4x earning on Southwest flights; 2x on local transit, internet, cable, and phone services (ends December 31, 2025)
- 9000 points per year on your card member anniversary
- $500 Fee credit for points transfers (ends December 31, 2025)
- First checked bag free for cardholder + up to 8 people on their reservation
- Select a Preferred seat for free at time of booking for cardholder + up to 8 people on their reservation
- Upgrade to an Extra Legroom seat for free 48 hours before departure (if available)
I thought the fee was inflated on this card back when it was $199. At $299 it’s a tough calculation to justify keeping long term. But since it typically has a higher welcome offer than the Premier Business card, a lot of people may end up with this one for at least a year to help earn a Companion Pass. It does have perks like the credit for Global Entry or TSA Pre√ or Nexus. Do your own calculation with our benefits calculators on all the Southwest cards.
Now that Southwest has made the switch to assigned seating, the ability to select a preferred seat for free at booking is potentially valuable for some people. And if you spend a lot with Southwest, the 4x earning rate is a good way to rack up a lot of Southwest points.
Overall, this card really helps make it so easy to get a Southwest Companion Pass. Just pay close attention to your timing when applying if you’re trying to maximize the Companion Pass.

This has a very high spend as well as high annual fee. BUT may be worth it for some people, especially if you can leverage the statement credits. The airline incidental statement credit is per calendar year. That means most people can actually get the airline credit twice in the first year of holding the card, up to $200 each time.
This card refreshed in September 2025 and added a few more credits along with raising the annual fee. Be sure to use our benefits calculator to find out if this card is worth it for you. The calculation is different for everyone!
The offers on this card fluctuate greatly. It has been as low as 80,000 points.

If you’re a Delta loyalist looking for a business card, this one might be for you. It’s got a pretty low annual fee (especially that first year) and comes with some perks like priority boarding and free checked bags.
It’s not as fancy as some of the other American Express business cards, but if you’re all about Delta and don’t want to break the bank on annual fees, this could be a good fit.
Somewhere between 55k to 60k miles is a standard welcome offer for this card. Frequently the sign up offer will briefly jump up to 80k or 90k miles. A 90,000 Bonus Miles offer ended 10/29/25.

Opening this business card versus one of the personal Marriott cards will help you stay under 5/24 longer and that’s the main benefit of this card. I do like the annual free night certificate, too — and that you can top it off with up to 15k points.
Be sure to pay close attention to all the eligibility rules when applying for any Marriott card as they are pretty convoluted!
Check out my map of family friendly Marriotts for inspiration.
The welcome offer fluctuates from 75,000 bonus points to 125,000 points.
- Sometimes the bonus is 3 free night certificates for up to 50k per night
- The highest we’ve seen was 5 free nights (up to 50k per night and ended March 2024, was offered again and ended July 2024).

Great way to start earning Membership Rewards points. That’s because while it has a lower bonus — if you get the Gold or Platinum cards FIRST, those will make you ineligible for the offer on this card.
This card does add to your 5/24 count so not the best for newbies. You’ll also have to use some of the perks to make up the annual fee.
The standard offer on this card is around 40,000-45,000 bonus points. In summer 2023, there was a 60,000 point bonus.
(Terms Apply | Rates and Fees)
Earn a $200 statement credit after each $10,000 you spend in purchases on the Card, up to $30,000, within the first 3 months of Card Membership.

-
Earn 1.5% cash back (Early Pay Discount) on every purchase when you pay your bill within 10 days of the statement closing date.
-
No Foreign Transaction Fees, making it a decent backup option for international business expenses.
-
Doesn’t count toward your 5/24 status because it is a business card and doesn’t report to your personal credit report.
I’ll be honest—this isn’t a card I usually talk about. For everyday earning, 1.5% cash back is just okay. If there is an elevated welcome offer of $500 or $600, it might be worth it for you to earn some extra cash back without adding to your 5/24 count, but will likely require a significant spend.
For long stretches, it has had no welcome bonus at all, or a modest $200 statement credit. We occasionally see it pop up to a $500 or $600 statement credit (usually requiring significant spend), but those offers are rare.
