More Ways to Earn Points
Credit Card Bonus Categories
Another way to increase the number of points you are earning is to pay attention to the bonus categories or promotions your credit cards may have.
I personally don't focus on maximizing my category earning too much, instead focusing my energy on new card signups.
Regular bonus categories: figure out your strategy with CardPointers
If you want to know what card to use where to max out your points, check out CardPointers.
The app that answers "which card do I use here?"
CardPointers
Tell it which cards you carry, and it identifies which one of yours is best to use at different kinds of stores — grocery, drugstores, gas, and so on.
This is our partner link. If you sign up through it we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you — and it doesn't change what we recommend.
Chase quarterly bonuses
Chase often offers targeted quarterly bonuses on co-branded cards, like Hyatt or Southwest. Sometimes you'll receive an email about these but often you won't.
Check at the beginning of each quarter to see if any promo is available to activate on your card.
What one of these actually looks like
Here's a promo I found waiting for me when I logged in.
Earn 5X total bonus points on:
- Gas station purchases
- Grocery store purchases
- Internet, cable and phone services
Valid for every $1 spent on up to $1,500 in combined purchases. Offer had to be activated before it counted.
That' was from real example from early 2023, shown so you know what to look for — not a current offer. Yours will be different, and it will be tied to the specific cards you hold.
