Additional Perks of Travel Credit Cards
Purchase Protection, Extended Warranty Protection, and Cell Phone Insurance
These three benefits were mentioned previously but here are some more details on each of them.
Purchase protection
Many cards offer purchase protection and extended warranty protection for items purchased on the card. Purchase protection provides coverage if an item is lost or stolen within 90–120 days of purchase.
On a trip to Thailand in 2019, my cell phone was stolen. Since I had purchased it less than 120 days before on a card with purchase protection, I received a full reimbursement from my credit card company.
Extended warranty
Extended warranty protection extends a manufacturer's warranty, most commonly by one year.
We used this benefit when we had a washing machine at our rental property break 22 months after we had purchased it. The manufacturer's warranty had only been for one year, but because it was covered under the extended warranty, we were reimbursed not only for the cost of the repairman to evaluate it (it was "totaled"), but also for a new washing machine.
Cell phone protection
A few credit cards are now also offering cell phone insurance for lost, damaged, or stolen phones if you pay your monthly bill with their credit card. Typically these have deductibles of $50–100.
Unfortunately, almost all cell phone carriers now charge an extra fee per line (or refuse to give an auto pay discount) if you pay your bill with a credit card which makes this benefit harder to use.
Always check the fine print on each of your cards, as benefits can change.
