PenFed Membership Now Open to Everyone (Multiple Paths)

Membership is open to everyone. There are multiple paths to join: military, government employees, family of military or PenFed members, a charitable donation ($15-20 to qualifying organizations), or the open membership path (since the 2018 Progressive CU acquisition). Membership requires a $5 minimum savings deposit. Significantly more accessible than Navy Federal, which is more strictly military-gated.

Redemption Caveats: ~0.85-0.9 cpp Effective, No Cash Back, No Transfer Partners, 5-Year Expiration

Points redemption is below the industry standard — a little more than 0.8 cents per point, well below the standard of a penny per point. There's no direct cash back redemption and no transfer partners, and points expire 5 years after earning. Redemption options: the PenFed Rewards catalog, PenFed travel portal, and Visa reward cards.

The PenFed Pathfinder is a not necessarily worth a 5/24 slot but definitely a keeper card if you do get it and can get the annual fee waived. the $95 annual fee gets WAIVED if you qualify for PenFed's Honors Advantage program. Easiest path for most people is opening a PenFed Access America Checking or Free Checking account.

At that point, you are getting the perks for $0 annually and that includes a $100 annual domestic air travel credit, $120 Global Entry credit, and $0 foreign transaction fees.

PenFed membership itself is open to everyone — you don't need a military connection. You can join via a small donation to a charity partner like Voices for America's Troops or the National Military Family Association ($15-20), or just go through PenFed's open membership path. Then deposit $5 in a savings account and you're in.

Points are worth a little less than 1 cent per point so I don't recommend spending on this -- it's more of a sock-drawer card for the perks.
